While the world fixated on scandals, exiles, and tell-all interviews, a quietly confident young man was fishing in Scottish rivers, flipping burgers at Balmoral barbecues, and slipping unnoticed through the hallways of one of England’s most prestigious boarding schools. That changed on Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, James \u2014 formally styled the Earl of Wessex \u2014 walked closely behind William, Kate, and their three children as the royal family gathered for the traditional Easter Matins service. For the first time in a long time, royal watchers blinked and paid attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That uncertainty, rather than undermining his appeal, might be exactly what makes him compelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is currently 16th in line to the throne, having dropped from eighth as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie expanded their families. He holds no formal working royal status.
