The saloon smelled like ash and old wood and something metallic that the boy was only beginning to understand was blood. He had stopped counting the bodies an hour ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man kneeling in front of him didn’t look like a ghost. Ghosts weren’t supposed to have callused hands and tired eyes. They weren’t supposed to look at you like you were the only thing in the world still worth protecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I wanted you far away from all of this,” John said. His voice was low and even, the kind of voice that had learned not to shake no matter what was happening behind the eyes. “Far from my enemies. Far from my name. I thought if I stayed away, the danger would stay with me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy \u2014 nine years old, too thin for his age, wearing a jacket two sizes too big \u2014 felt something crack open in his chest. Not grief exactly. Something older and angrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You left me,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John’s jaw tightened. A muscle moved in his cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No,” he said. “I never left. I was at your fifth birthday, thirty feet back, in the trees. I watched you blow out the candles. I watched you fall off your bike on Clement Street. I was there when you had the fever that went to a hundred and four and I sat outside that hospital for eleven hours because going inside would have put every person in that building at risk.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy stared at him. His hands had stopped shaking. That was almost worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Open the pendant,” John said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy looked down at the small oval locket he’d worn every day for as long as he could remember. His mother had said it was a family heirloom. She’d said don’t lose it. She’d said some things matter even when you don’t know why yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He opened it with trembling fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside was a photograph \u2014 faded, small, creased at the edges. A younger version of the man in front of him, holding an infant, smiling in a way that didn’t match anything else about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Under it,” John said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Carefully, the boy peeled back the thin paper backing behind the photo. It resisted, then gave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Folded impossibly small, almost invisible against the brass: a strip of microfilm no wider than a fingernail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The room went still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the bikers near the door let out a long, slow breath. The leader \u2014 a man named Vasquez who had seen things that should have made him impossible to surprise \u2014 closed his eyes for just a moment and said something quiet and profane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John stood. His knees didn’t make a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There are sixty-one names on that film,” he said. “Not criminals in the ordinary sense. We’re talking about the infrastructure behind the crimes. Judges who decided which cases got buried. Senators who signed off on which investigations went nowhere. Finance men who cleaned the money until it sparkled. Crime bosses who provided the muscle when the others needed deniability. They built something over thirty years that looked like a government and functioned like a syndicate. And they were very, very careful.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy looked at the strip of film between his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They’re chasing me for this?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They’ve been tracking it for four years. They knew it existed. They didn’t know where it had gone.” John paused. “Your mother hid it. Before she died, she made sure it went somewhere they’d never think to look.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Around the neck of a kid.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Around the neck of my kid.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outside, the sound of engines had grown into something like weather \u2014 a low, building pressure that vibrated in the chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vasquez moved to the window without being told. He looked out at the darkness and the approaching headlights and came back shaking his head slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There are a lot of them,” was all he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John picked up the gun he’d set down to kneel. He looked at it for a moment, then looked at his son \u2014 really looked, the way you look at something you’re afraid might be the last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I made a decision when you were three days old,” he said. “I decided that the most important thing I could do was make sure you never became what I am. I let you believe I was gone. I let you build a life that had nothing to do with any of this. I told myself it was the only way to keep you clean.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy’s voice came out harder than he expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“But it didn’t work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No,” John said. “It didn’t work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A window shattered somewhere in the back of the building. Vasquez’s men moved without speaking, taking positions they clearly knew by instinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy looked at the microfilm one more time, then closed his fingers around it. He closed the pendant over it. He pressed it against his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he raised his head and looked his father in the eyes \u2014 steady, certain, a gaze that had no business belonging to a nine-year-old, and said the last thing anyone in that room expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Then tell me everything.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John Wick looked at his son for a long moment. Something behind his expression shifted \u2014 not pride exactly, not grief exactly. Something between them that didn’t have a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
