My childhood friend Beto, the wedding photographer \u2014 silently enslaved by the Casta\u00f1edas through his father’s debt \u2014 had been filming from the bathroom doorway. Santiago told him to keep recording. Beto raised the camera with shaking hands. He was livestreaming to the giant screen in the courtyard, where two hundred guests, business partners, and local press were watching every word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do\u00f1a Elena lunged for her handbag and drew a pearl-handled revolver. She pressed it toward Santiago’s chest.
